Pepero Day 11.11.11 (Late Post)

11.11 is usually celebrated as Pepero Day in South Korea. Because 11.11 looks like four Pepero sticks!

And for four years of teaching English to Koreans and having numerous Korean friends, this day made me excited too.

For those who are not familiar with Pepero, it is a cookie stick dipped in chocolate (and comes in a variety of flavors), manufactured by Lotte Confectionery. According to Wikipedia, Pepero Day is similar to Valentine's Day in Korea. This is mostly observed by couples and young people (those who go to school usually exchange not only Pepero but other goodies with their classmates). A lot of people actually say that Lotte started this "tradition" in order to increase sales, but the company has denied this. Others say that this started out in 1994 when some middle school girls in Busan exchanged Pepero sticks as presents and wished one another to grow "as tall and slender as Pepero".

And this year is an extra special Pepero Day because it's 11.11.11. You do not only get 4 Pepero sticks, but six! How cool is that? And 11.11.11 only happens once in one thousand years! Hence, this wish. haha.

Anyway, thanks to my student-teacher, Lynn for giving me my Pepero on Pepero Day! Til next year.
